Finishes

“Natural stone has always enjoyed a great fame and is considered generally as a noble, versatile and durable building material: the monuments and stone sculptures in our historic city centres substantiate this statement. For the last decade this material has increased in popularity, among others by the new possibilites in colours and finishes, realised thanks to technological renewals in the exploration and tooling of natural stone.”

Hand Honed

As the name suggest the honing is done by hand rather than machine and therefore you will see abrasive and carborandum markings within the finish. The hand honed surface is smooth with fine (hardly noticeable) circular lines. This kind of finish is mostly used for external floors.

The honing is created using different grades of abrasives under factory conditions. The honed surface gives a relatively slight and pale reflection (a matt-shiny finish depending on the stone). The surface is smooth, matt, without grooves. This kind of finish is the most recommendable and is applied for internal flooring in natural stone.

Polished

The polishing is achieved using the same machining as honing but with even finer abrasives. By polishing a stone the colours are reinforced and the stone gets a reflecting surface with a high gloss. The degree of polish of the natural stone is mainly determined by the degree of polish of its natural mineral elements and its texture. Therefore not every natural stone can be polished. The kind of finish is advised against by the Belgian Building & Research Institute for internal flooring in natural stone. But it’s perfectly usable for wall coverings and all sorts of cut to size applications.
